Overview
Smoky Lake County is a municipal district situated in northeastern Alberta, approximately 120 kilometres northeast of Edmonton within Census Division No. 12. As a sprawling rural municipality, it recorded a population of 3,874 residents during the 2021 Statistics Canada census. The county's borders encompass a diverse array of communities, including the Town of Smoky Lake, the Villages of Waskatenau and Vilna, and several unincorporated hamlets such as Bellis, Edwand, Spedden, and Warspite. It also entirely surrounds two independent Métis Settlements, Buffalo Lake and Kikino. Positioned in a prime transition zone of the Aspen Parkland, the county balances robust natural wilderness with highly productive agricultural lands.
